Tourism & Leisure

Tourism is one of the world’s greatest economic engines and has a major impact on the global development of infrastructure and cultural assets. As a sector it has exploded in both absolute and relative terms since the end of WWII, and now accounts for something like 9.4% of global GDP and almost 1 in every 13 jobs around the world. In some smaller economies, tourism may account for over 50% of GDP and over 70% of employment.

And it is set to carry on growing, despite the current economic slowdown – as tourism is an aspirational activity that flourishes as developing countries, from Eastern Europe to China, to India and Mexico and so on, create a new middle class with disposable time and income as a result of increasing economic development and living standards.

Leisure of course has a wider connotation and includes major sectors such as Sports, Arts, Entertainment, Culture, Heritage and aspects of Retail. It too benefits from increased living standards, but does not rely on a major travel component. Arguably, Leisure is more resilient to economic hard times – people still have to spend their non-working time doing something.

Key Trends

Globalisation of markets with more efficient (and sustainable) methods of travel and information exchange via the Web

Move from mass tourism to more bespoke, “experiential” activities

Development of a major investment class

Increasing professionalisation of the industry

Rising customer expectations

Growth of “Days Out” and more frequent short breaks

Greater awareness of environmental impact and regulation
